I had never heard of spatial econometrics, … until the the special sessions on spatial econometrics at the 32nd European congress of the RSAI in Brussels, 1992. After the conference, I immediately bought your book on Spatial Econometrics, which I think is still one of the best textbooks in this field. You really deserve this prize, because you stimulated and still stimulate so many people to start working with spatial econometrics and also because you created the possibilities for these people to set the first steps, not only because of your textbook, but also thanks to the software you have developed.

For me it all started in Brussels.
